Tips for Red Alert

Tips & Tricks for Red Alert.

RULES.INI

The RULES.INI file enables you to edit the "Red Alert Rules".
But it doesn't normally exist in the RA directory. So you'll have to extract it from the REDALERT.MIX file.
Here are the steps to extract RULES.INI:

  1. Open REDALERT.MIX with WordPad or Word or something like that.
  2. Click Find, type RULES.INI and click Find Next.
  3. Click at the start of the "readable" section, starting with:";if placed in game directory...
  4. Go to the end of the readable section (don't use PGUP or PGDN or the arrow keys!).
  5. Hold SHIFT and click just under the readable section. The selected text turns white-in-black.
  6. Right-click on the selected text and choose Copy. Then close WordPad.
  7. Create a new file named RULES.INI, and open it in wordpad.
  8. Right-click in the empty document and choose Paste.
  9. Now you have a RULES.INI file with info on the different commands. Just edit and see!

Transport & Mine Layer Trick

This is an easy trick, which you do in the game.
This is what to do:

  1. Select some units.
  2. With the group selected, SHIFT-click on a mine layer or a Transport ship (if you selected ships in step 1).
  3. Group them together (CTRL+#), and make them a formation (F).
  4. Now, move the units, and the other units will follow the Mine Layer/Transport AT THE SAME SPEED (10)!

Super-Grenadiers

Grenades have an unlimited range, did you know that?
The trick is simple, but it could be hard to do if you have the game speed very high.
Just do this:

  1. First, put the game speed low.
  2. Select one or more Grenadiers.
  3. Attack any cell (which should be in range of all of them!).
  4. Just before they throw their grenade, let them attack another cell (which could be anywhere on the map).
  5. And there they go! Cruiser-range grenages!

It may take some practice, but it could come in so handy when you're standing head to head with a (camo) pillbox!
Still, at long range, grenades have the same inaccuracy problems as the cruiser.

The famous tank rush strategy

This works only with the basic version of Red Alert, not with The Aftermath.
It isn't really a trick, just a way of getting a pile of units very quick.
Just do this:

  1. Build a lot of the kind of building facility (War Factory, Barracks) you want to speed up. The more facilities, the more speed.
  2. Make one of the facilities primary.
  3. Build units.

The reason this doesn't work with The Aftermath, is because the Aftermath patch changes the game in such way that more than 2 facilities has no build speed effect.
